Let's break out of the binary thinking trap!🙅🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♂️

church online leadership

This is something I am personally guilty of doing all the time. We need to break free from the binary thinking trap, specifically when it comes to church. It's time to challenge ourselves to think outside of the box and leverage both in-person and online spaces.

What is binary thinking?

Binary thinking, or dichotomous thinking, is the belief that there are only two opposing sides, and one must choose between them. This way of thinking can be comforting as it simplifies complex ideas and situations, but it often ignores the gray area in the middle.

While binary thinking can offer a sense of certainty, it also comes with limitations. The complexity of the middle ground is overlooked, and the uncertainty of these nuances can be overwhelming, especially during uncertain times like the ones we're currently experiencing.

We think certainty and clarity are the same but they are not. Choosing one side does not automatically mean that you have a clear understanding of a complex issue. So let's challenge ourselves to recognize and appreciate the gray area in between and not fall into the trap of limiting ourselves to a binary way of thinking.

When it comes to the church, let's remember that the church isn't defined by a physical location. It's us - the people. This includes meeting weekly at a church building but it also includes connecting daily. Therefore, we don't have to choose between in-person or online. Why not have both?

The truth is, technology has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for us. We can connect with people from all over the world and share the gospel in ways we couldn't before. At the same time, we also cherish the value of in-person connection. There's something special about being together in the same physical space.

Another example is when we think about hiring a leader for our Online Ministry. Should we lean towards someone that's more technical or someone who is more Pastoral? Maybe we don't have to pick just one but believe that God will bring the right person with the right gift mix to the team.

So let's break free from the either-or mentality and embrace the power of technology while still cherishing the value of in-person connection. Instead of seeing online as a threat to in-person church or vice versa, let's find ways to complement each other and offer the best experience for our community.

This can mean anything from live streaming services to providing online small group options to hosting in-person gatherings while still offering an online option. It's about being creative and flexible while keeping the needs of our community in mind.

In conclusion, let's break out of the binary thinking trap and reimagine what it means to be the church in this digital age. We can embrace technology while still cherishing the value of in-person connection. Are you with me? Let's go forth and find new ways to connect, grow, and worship together as the church.
